A Glimpse into the World of Homeopathy

This week, I decided to give you a glimpse into the world of homeopathic treatment. This is a summary of a day in a typical homeopath’s practice. The day was some months ago, to give you an idea of the medium term effect of the treatment.

The day started with a phone call. Blackie is, not surprisingly, a black cat who sometimes gets into trouble with neighbouring cats. Mostly he stays inside at night, but occasionally he doesn’t. After one such night, he returned sore and injured from what looked like the after effects of a fight. He was taken to a veterinarian, who charged $450 for surgery and drugs.

This time, his people had discovered homeopathy and had even bought a homeopathic home prescribing kit from me. They rang me in a fluster. I suggested the use of one remedy in their kit with instructions to keep me up to date. Blackie responded well, but the next day pus was oozing from a wound. He needed a different remedy, also in the kit.

A week later, the report was that he had completely healed. I had probably spent about five minutes in total on the phone. I couldn’t bring myself to charge the full consultation rate (currently at $95).

My first appointment was with a woman who has recently had an operation for endometriosis. She still suffered with the same level of pain. After spending an hour and a half with her, a normal initial consultation time, I worked out her homeopathic medicine.

She returned a month later, with much less pain, more energy and a healthy appetite for good food rather than junk food. A month later, she told me she had not been this well for a long time.

Next came a young man with severe arthritis in his wrists. He had taken all the meds his doctor had prescribed, but the pain was getting worse. He was beginning to worry about the effects the pain killers, drugs and steroids were having on his body. It was also impeding his work as a plumber, as using his hands was becoming increasingly painful.

He didn’t return for two months, but when he did, he told me his wrists had been so good, he had forgotten about them. Until the medicine stopped working. We needed to make a minor adjustment on the potency (strength) of the medicine and a week later, he reported things were good again.

In the afternoon, I was called to see a horse with colic. Colic comes in different guises, each needing a different medicine. On offering the horse my selected medicine, he practically ate the bottle, indicating a good choice. After one dose, he visibly relaxed. Another couple of doses that day resolved the problem. He has since had no more episodes of colic, although it was getting to be a monthly occasion.

The last appointment of the day was with a small child, Sabine. She had come to see me a month before with sore ears. Her mother didn’t want to go down the antibiotic and surgery route, as she had with her first born. But Sabine hadn’t responded to my treatment. I retook her symptoms and prescribed a different medicine. I heard from her mother about a month later. Sabina had had no more symptoms after the second dose, a week after the first one. She was eating, sleeping and playing as any healthy four year old does.
